I am serving as a Guest Editor, with Dr. Zhiping Zhao and Dr. Chang Liao, for a Special Issue of Land titled “Land Use Change and Climate Change Adaptation: Coupling Mechanisms and Spatiotemporal Dynamics”. Submissions are open until 31 May 2027.

About the Special Issue

Land use change and climate change shape each other. Urbanization, agricultural expansion, forest and wetland transitions, and land degradation alter ecosystem functions and exposure to climate hazards. Rising temperatures, shifting precipitation, droughts, floods, and wildfires in turn reshape land use decisions and spatial development. The Special Issue collects original research and review papers on the coupling mechanisms and spatiotemporal dynamics that link the two, with an emphasis on how land systems adapt and how planning and management build resilience.

Themes include:

• Coupling mechanisms and feedbacks between land use change and climate change adaptation
• Spatiotemporal patterns, drivers, and consequences of land use change under climate change
• Vulnerability and resilience of land systems, including exposure and adaptive capacity
• Planning and management for climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction
• Ecosystem services and nature-based solutions for climate adaptation
• Trade-offs and synergies among adaptation, mitigation, biodiversity, and food security
• Scenario analysis and land-system modeling for climate-resilient pathways
• Remote sensing, GIS, big data, and AI for monitoring and modeling coupled land-climate dynamics

Call for papers

We welcome interdisciplinary work that integrates land system science, climate science, geography, ecology, and planning. Empirical analysis, remote sensing and GIS, spatial modeling, scenario simulation, and machine learning are all in scope. Studies that connect their findings to planning, adaptation strategies, and policy design are especially welcome. Research articles, reviews, and short communications are accepted, and papers are published continuously as soon as they are accepted.
